Skyline College is required by the State of California to enforce course prerequisites and co-requisites. To meet a prerequisite, students must demonstrate successful completion of the prerequisite/co-requisite by:
- Completing the prerequisite/co-requisite course, or comparable, with a grade of “C” or better; - or -
- Passing an approved Alternative Placement Exam (ex. AP) with a minimum acceptable score.
I have met the prerequisite as stated here, please complete the Prerequisite Equivalency form instead.
Why am I completing the Prerequisite Challenge form?
You are completing the challenge form if you have not met the prerequisite/co-requisite requirements as stated above, but you can demonstrate having met the prerequisite through other supportive documentation.
To complete the Challenge form:
- Provide all required documentation as noted below. Incomplete petitions will not be considered.
1. Student statement/letter. Provide a letter that explains the reason(s) you are challenging the prerequisite or co-requisite and explicitly states the skills and abilities you have that meet the prerequisite/co-requisite requirement.
2. Supporting documentation. Appropriate documentation should include any of the following: college transcripts as evidence of successful course completion, catalog course description, course outline and/or course syllabus, documentation of professional work experience, relevant high school transcripts, letters of recommendation from employers or instructors, samples of graded papers, professional licenses or certificates, a portfolio or a demonstration of prerequisite skill.
If you are currently enrolled in the prerequisite course and have yet to receive a final grade on your transcript, please submit a current progress report for the course(s) being requested and a current copy of your unofficial transcript.
NOTE:
- The Skyline College Counseling Division receives all Prerequisite Challenge petitions. Final review and decision will be made by the respective division Dean for the course(s) being requested.
- Please allow 3-5 business days for review to be completed. During the peak period of registration, the volume of requests increases which may impact response time to 7-10 days. You will be notified by email of the final outcome.
